About Bobbin

How Does AI Work in Bobbin’s Lesson Platform?

We get it, not everyone is excited by AI. As a tutor, you’ll likely, and rightly, have questions about how it works and what this means for you and your students. We know that for educators in particular, privacy and safeguarding concerns are paramount.

That’s why we’ve put together this guide on how Bobbin uses smart AI to deliver high-quality lessons. Our platform is built for educators by the team behind TutorCruncher, putting you front and centre, using AI to speed up your admin and help you focus on what matters.

What type of AI does Bobbin use?

Bobbin uses OpenAI’s LLM (Large Language Model), which is a type of Artificial Intelligence that’s designed to read, write and understand human language. It’s made by the same company as ChatGPT, but we use a business-ready version, which is more secure.

Where is the server based?

OpenAI’s servers are based primarily in the United States, with data residencies in the EU.

How do you manage privacy and security?

We’ve built Bobbin specifically for tutoring with privacy and security front and center.

In order to keep our platform secure, we:

  • Never share Personally Identifiable Information (PII) with the LLM. Information is removed before being passed through the LLM and added to your final reports in Bobbin.
  • Restrict the PII shared with Lessonspace, our online whiteboard integration, with no personal information from our customers stored on their side.
  • Don’t allow OpenAI to train its models on our organization’s data. You can read more about OpenAI’s security and privacy policy here

We’re committed to remaining GDPR compliant and maintaining the high quality in privacy and security that customers expect. Take a look at Bobbin’s full privacy policy here for more.

So what happens when Bobbin…

…Makes a lesson plan?

When you generate a lesson plan in Bobbin, the AI takes the context provided in your prompt and creates a structured plan around the subject using its trained data. If you use one of our connected curricula, the AI will create its modules, topics and objectives specific to existing curricula.

…Transcribes a lesson?

Lesson transcriptions are made from both online and in-person lessons. The AI will take the recorded lesson, transcribe what was said, attributing different speakers and timestamps from what happened in the session.

…Creates a parent report?

When Bobbin creates a final lesson report for parents, tutors or students, the AI will take the transcription data and, using our custom prompts, will break down the transcript by the different sections needed in the report. It will use our prompts to identify strengths and weaknesses, and key learning outcomes, using this to complete detailed reports.

Is AI safe to use in education?

When used in the right way, AI is safe and appropriate to use in education settings. The important thing to remember as an educator is that the tools you need must be secure and private, and that you should not rely on AI alone. Human editing and judgement are key. That’s why our lesson plans and reporting are all fully editable, so you can make sure everything you’re showing students and parents or guardians is tailored to them and properly checked.

Final thoughts

AI is rapidly changing the way that tutoring companies manage their time and their lessons. While it has clear benefits, like reducing admin and enabling higher client satisfaction (and retention), it’s important to take the time to understand how new tools work and that they are appropriate for use in an educational setting.

The goal of Bobbin is to support your teaching through secure and reliable AI that helps you to deliver better lessons.
